Federal budget: Bar Association and Law Council condemn cuts to legal aid

The president of the New South Wales Bar Association, Phillip Boulten SC, has warned that the $15 million in cuts to Commonwealth legal aid funding announced in last night’s federal budget will adversely impact on parties, courts and the justice system as a whole. Similarly, the Law Council of Australia president, Mr Michael Colbran QC, said the cuts to legal aid announced tonight will have a significant impact on the capacity of already chronically under-funded legal assistance bodies to provide legal services to many Australians. Learn more here.
