Mabo Day
03/06/2014

Today commemorates Mabo Day, a celebration of the decision of the High Court in Mabo v Queensland (No 2), handed down on 3 June 1992, which effectively overturned the doctrine of terra nullius. It also recognises the efforts of Eddie Koiki Mabo of Mer island in the Torres Strait, who spent a decade seeking official recognition of his people’s ownership of Mer. Today also marks the conclusion of National Reconciliation Week. The theme of this year’s NRW was ‘Walk the talk’.
All barristers and chambers staff are welcome to attend the exhibition in support of Indigenous artists and the Ars Musica Australis being held by 12 Selborne Wentworth Chambers between 1 and 6 pm tomorrow.
