Supreme Court community engagement seminar now online
17/06/2014
Earlier this year, Chief Justice Tom Bathurst AC announced that the Supreme Court would hold a series of seminars to facilitate better community understanding of the judiciary's work and to improve public awareness of the administration of criminal justice in New South Wales, particularly in relation to the criminal sentencing process.
In March 2014, the court held seminars for members of the New South Wales Parliament and for media representatives. On 20 May 2014, the court held the third and final seminar for representatives of a wide range of community groups, including advocacy groups, outreach and welfare services, research centres, peak education bodies and government agencies that interact with the criminal justice system and have direct contact with members of the community who become involved in the system. This Community Engagement Seminar was filmed by an independent production company engaged by the court. The video of that seminar is available here.
The chief justice thanks all those who attended these seminars and for the thoughtful questions and issues raised for discussion during these seminars.
