Parole a valuable tool to reduce re-offending

11/09/2014

The New South Wales Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research has published two reports, both of which provide strong evidence that parole system is effective in reducing the rate of re-offending. Parole Supervision and Re-offending found offenders released on parole are less likely to re-offend than those released without any supervision. At the same time, a separate study found that only 28.4 per cent re-offended while on parole - much lower than 61 per cent, as previously thought.

In response to the findings, the director of BOCSAR, Dr Don Weatherburn, said: "The message that comes through loud and clear from this research is that the parole process is a valuable tool when it comes to reducing the risk of further offending".
