Speeches to note: consistency in sentencing

The Hon J J Spigelman AC, chief justice of New South Wales, has delivered�the keynote address to the National Judicial College of Australia's Sentencing 2008 conference on 8 February. Among the points covered in Justice Spigelman's speech was consistency in sentencing for Commonwealth offences. The chief justice�signalled support for�composite appeal benches comprised of interstate judges�for matters of national significance.�

"I have no difficulty in entering into arrangements with other states to have experienced criminal judges [sitting] as acting judges of the Supreme Court of New South Wales Court of Criminal Appeal, on days when we list criminal appeals with respect to Commonwealth offences,including sentence and Crown appeals", said the chief justice.�Learn more>
