Invitiation to the unveiling of Bob Bellear portrait

On Wednesday,�12 March 2008 at 5.15 pm in the Bar Association Common Room, the association will be honoured to unveil a portrait of Bob Bellear at his swearing in to the District Court.� Dr Bellear was appointed as a judge of the District Court in 1996, Australiaâs first Aboriginal judge.� Prior to that he worked as a public defender.� Bob came to the Bar in 1979 after gaining his law degree from the University of New South Wales.� He also served as chairperson of the New South Wales Aboriginal Justice Advisory Committee and as the patron of Ngalaya Indigenous Lawyers and Law Students Association. Bob was involved in the establishment of the Aboriginal Medical Service, Tranby College and the Aboriginal Legal Service. The unveiling will also be an opportunity to support the work of the Indigenous Barristersâ Trust.��Donations over $25 will be eligible for a painting by Maria Josette Orsto of Bathurst Island called Jilimara (armbands).
