Bureau of Crime Statistics launches report on alternatives to custodial sentences

27/02/2008

The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research has announced the findings of its research on rates of imprisonment and alternatives to custody in regional New South Wales. Intoday's media release, BOCSAR saidthat "contrary to popular wisdom, offenders in the inner, outer, remote and very remote regional areas of NSW, were less likely to receive a prison sentence than offenders in the inner metropolitan regions".

The report, published in Crime and Justice BulletinNo111 (January 2008) addresses concerns that a shortage of alternatives to custody was resulting in higher imprisonmentrates outside metropolitan areas.
