Portrait of the Hon Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG

In July 2006 the Bar Association, in conjunction with the Law Society of New South Wales, purchased a magnificent portrait of the Hon Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG, which was an entry in the 2006 Archibald Prize competition. The whole of the association’s share of the cost has now been covered, thanks to the generosity of its members.

The artist, Josonia Palaitis, is a well known Australian portrait artist. She has won the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and is a frequent entrant in the Archibald Prize for portraiture.

After consultation with Chief Justice Spigelman the portrait was donated to the Supreme Court of New South Wales so that it can be displayed in the President’s Court on Level 12 of the Law Courts building. The gift is a symbol of the great esteem and affection in which his Honour is held by the profession and especially here in New South Wales.

Many members of the association took the opportunity to make an individual donation towards the cost of the portrait. To provide the maximum opportunity for members of the association to donate, a standard contribution amount of $250 per person was fixed.
