Breakfast Talk series: Stoic apathy contrasted to the foundations of our duty of care
16/05/2008

Members are invited toattend next week's Breakfast Talk on Thursday, 22 May. Entitled"The Stoics argued for apathy, the detachment from passion. Why then do we have a duty of care?", by historian Professor Edwin Judge, it willaddress issues relating to law and our mixed heritage â classical and biblical.
Stoics argued for apathy (the detachment from passion). Yet the Apostle Paul does not argue for the moderation of feelings â instead he exhibited passionate bonds with his fellow-workers. Paulâs reflection on the paradox of a suffering Israelite king (Messiah) was the foundation behind the obligation of personal commitment, and the origin of the value of humility in western thought.
Emeritus Professor Edwin Judge of Macquarie University is one of the leading academic figures in Australia. Professor Judge will be speaking over Thursday breakfasts in May **at Silks Coffee Lounge, 170 Phillip St (next to Selborne Chambers). Breakfast from 7:20am, (at own cost), please order by 7.30am â talks commence 7:40am, conclude 8:20am. **
