Australian Government announces funding boost for ALS and access to justice in regional areas

The minister for home affairs, the Hon Bob Debus,� has announced the allocation of�more than $6.3 million in one-off funding for Aboriginal Legal Services (ALS), which will help them meet extra demand for legal assistance. Yesterday's announcement takes the total funding for Aboriginal legal services for 2007-2008 to more than $64million.

In addition, Attorney-General Robert McClelland today announced $5.8 million in extra funding to improve access to justice for communities in regional, rural and remote Australia. This comes on top of a $10 million one-off injection for the Commonwealth Community Legal Services Program�and a $7 million one-off injection for legal aid. View the attorney's media release>
