TheAustralianGovernment will extend a standing invitation to the United Nations Human Rights Councilto visit Australia.

“The Government supports both the promotion of human rights internationally and the development of international standards and mechanisms for the protection and enforcement of these rights,”Attorney General RobertMcClelland said.

The United Nations Human Rights Council has a mandate to examine, monitor, advise and publicly report on human rights situations in specific countries, or on major human rights issues anywhere in the world. But in order to send a special rapporteur or a working group to any country, permission of the receiving country must be obtained.
