Taking the heat out of judicial appointments

The Australian Bar Association has praised�Attorney-General�Robert McClelland�for his consultative approach to�making judicial appointments. Meanwhile, in the United States,�the president of the American Bar Association, H Thomas Wells Jr., has published an op-ed article saying it is 'time to turn down the heat' in their�selection and confirmation�of federal judges.
'Imagine being recruited for a job that pays well below others in your field, requires an interview process that is likely to lead to public attacks on your intelligence and character, and offers no assurance when, or if, you will be hired.� Even in todayâs tight market that sounds like a hard sell',�Mr Wells said.
'For many men and women nominated for a federal judgeship today, this is exactly what they face. This prospect is dysfunctional and wrong, and itâs time to take a number of steps to fix it', he said.
