The Climate Change Litigation Directory

This page is maintained by the NSW Bar Association’s Climate Change Committee. The Chair of the Climate Change Committee is Richard Lancaster SC and the Deputy Chair is Sebastian Hartford Davis.

The Climate Change Litigation Directory provides links to external materials and resources on climate change litigation around the world. It aims to assist legal practitioners in their preparation for cases and to assist practitioners, students and the public in their understanding of the intersection of science and law in the developing area of climate change litigation.

Australasian Resources

The University of Melbourne’s Australian and Pacific Climate Change Litigation database. This database records litigation (including settled cases and court orders) on issues of climate change in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

The Australian Government Solicitor’s Legal Briefing publications. In particular, the Legal Briefing on Recent trends in climate change litigation published on 1 June 2022.

The NSW Bar Association’s Bar News magazine – The Climate Change Special Edition - Winter 2023.

The International Bar Association’s Litigation Committee’s publications. In particular, the article by Mike Hales and Nicole Phillips titled Climate change litigation in Australia – an update published on 28 April 2023.

Norton Rose Fulbright’s climate change and sustainability publications. In particular, its Climate change litigation updates, the most recent of which was published in July 2023.

Columbia Law School’s Sabin Center for Climate Change Law’s Climate Change Litigation Databases. This site provides a database for U.S. climate change litigation and a database for global climate change litigation.

The London School of Economics and Political Science’s Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment’s Climate Change Laws of the World database. This database covers national-level climate change legislation and policies globally.

The United Nations Environment Programme’s Global Climate Litigation Report: 2023 Status Review published on 27 July 2023. This review provides an overview of the current state of climate change litigation and an update on global climate change litigation trends.
